Engineering
Founding Engineer, Tutoring Engine
Own the path from a student's messy attempt to the one question that moves them forward.
- Location
- Boston, MA or remote in the US
- Type
- Full time
- Compensation
- $165,000 to $200,000 plus 0.4% to 0.9% equity
Tutorly guides students through the work instead of handing over the answer. The tutoring engine is the product: reading an attempt, diagnosing the specific misunderstanding, choosing the next move, and holding the line on not solving graded work.
You would be the third engineer. The work decides whether Tutorly teaches or just answers, which is the whole company. A turn that gives away the answer is worse than a turn that says nothing.
What you would own
- Own the prompt and routing layer that turns a conversation into a single, well-aimed tutoring move.
- Build the evaluation set: sessions with known misconceptions, scored on whether Tutorly guided rather than answered.
- Keep turns fast and cheap enough to feel like a conversation, which is mostly routing well rather than prompting cleverly.
- Make math render cleanly, every time, on a phone and a laptop.
What we are looking for
- Five or more years building backend systems other people depend on.
- You have shipped with language models in production and have hard-won opinions about evaluation.
- You write TypeScript comfortably, or you will within a fortnight.
- You care about the difference between a demo and a tool a fourteen year old uses at 9pm before a test.
How hiring runs
A thirty minute call with a founder, then a paid work session on a real problem from our backlog, three to four hours, then conversations with two people you would work with. Four steps, usually inside two weeks, and we tell you where you stand at every one.
