About

A tutor for every student who has ever been stuck

Tutorly exists because a copied answer looks like learning and is not. A patient tutor who guides you to understand your own work is the thing that helps, and language models are the first technology that can offer one to everyone.

Why we built it

The gap is help, not answers

A student who is stuck has two easy options and neither teaches. They can copy an answer, which finishes the worksheet and leaves them lost on the test, or they can pay for a private tutor at forty to eighty dollars an hour, which most families cannot do most nights.

The thing that actually helps sits between those two: a patient person who does not tell you the answer, who asks the question that makes you notice what you missed, and who waits while you work it out. That is expensive and scarce, which is exactly the kind of thing worth building.

Maya taught high school math for six years and kept watching answer keys make students look finished and leave them stuck. Daniel spent eight years building systems that reason over student work. Tutorly is the two of those put together: the tutor Maya wanted in every classroom, available to any student, at a price a family will actually pay.

We are careful about what we claim. Tutorly is a learning tool, not a service that finishes assignments, and like any tutor it can be wrong. It guides you to understand your own work, and it keeps a clear line on academic integrity, because helping a student learn and doing their homework are not the same thing.

The team

9 people, working on this full time

Five of them are below. Everyone is based in the United States and nobody here has a second job: Tutorly is what we do.

Maya Ellison

Co-founder and CEO

Boston, MA

Taught high school math for six years, then spent three more in learning science research on how students build understanding. She kept watching answer keys make students look finished and leave them stuck on the test. Tutorly is the tutor she wanted in every classroom.

Daniel Okafor

Co-founder and CTO

Boston, MA

Machine learning engineer for eight years, most recently on systems that reason step by step over student work. He owns the tutoring engine, the model routing layer and the evaluation set that measures whether Tutorly is guiding rather than answering.

Rachel Tran

Head of Learning Science

Boston, MA

Cognitive scientist who studies misconceptions: the specific wrong idea behind a wrong answer. She designs how Tutorly diagnoses an attempt and decides which question moves a student forward instead of around in circles.

Samuel Reyes

Founding Engineer

Austin, TX

Works on the parts nobody sees: fast, reliable tutoring turns, clean math rendering, and the server-side rules that keep a free session honest and a paid one unlimited.

Nina Kovac

Design

Brooklyn, NY

Designs the session screen, which is the whole product. Her rule: a fourteen year old should feel encouraged, never talked down to, and should always know what the next small step is.

The people and the investors named on this page are fictional. Tutorly is a demonstration company and we would rather say so plainly than have you find out later. Everything about the product is real: the tutoring engine, the model routing and the free tier all work exactly as described.
